"A white bobbin quivers.  It links earth and sky.  A thread unites man with God.  We are that thread."

- The three paintings in the columns above are by the Shodo Master Saiso Shimada created after meditating with Nathalie Ishizuka on Dr. Paul Briot's Text.  Shimada has been meditating for many years Qigong (Kikou) and Zen and began meditating about 3-4x weekly with Nathalie in an intensive training only 3 years ago.

We meditated in Samyama on different texts and on different themes using a method taught by my Raja yoga teacher.

This method can be learned by other Artists using a step by step approach found in AYP (Advanced Yoga Practices) by Yogani.

Shimada is also introducing to some of her students interested this AYP method to support the study of shodo with meditation traditionally taught with Zen.

Spirit of the Earth

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, Acrylic, canvas, 61cm x80cm, 2020

An acrylic painting on wood panel by Nathalie Ishizuka with a meditation for the viewer on the Earth Element, a necessary element for grounding and being completely in the present moment.

The Earth element allows us to enjoy life, and is the cornerstone to health and manifestation of all of our creativity as well as the realization of our deepest aspirations.

This painting captures an experience during a sunrise that lit up the sky and a feeling of beauty of the Earth in all things.

Mother Earth

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, Acrylic, canvas, 92cm x122cm, 2020

Mother Earth by Nathalie Ishizuka invites you to change your conception of who is your Mother and of the process of life itself.

Was this body really ever ours or is it borrowed by the earth and returned at the moment of our Death? What did you do with the loan you were given?

How can you now ground yourself in the Earth and be an important part of change in this world. Meditation on how we can honor this body, our mother, creation and the earth itself.

Intersections: Etre de Lumiere & Personage

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, Acrylic, canvas, 92cm x122cm, 2020

Who are You?

Regardless of what you believe the experience of this painting shifted my perspective. From our Theatrical Self to our Inspired Being, the painting captures our living transformation as we shift identities and balance our earth and water body with our fire and air body.  Full integration and alignment is a life long process and the ultimate art of life.  We are in constant vigililence. Constant balance and loving attention.

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, The Resurrection Inside Us, Acrylic, canvas, 92cm x122cm, 2020.

When we become stable like a mountain, external elements can not touch us.  The Earth is our mother, the Sun our father.  Everything in between the Holy Spirit.  This is only possible when we send love inside our hearts and become love itself.  When this state becomes a constant, we may experience a Resurrection, our own, with Christ living in our hearts.  We may become suns radiating love for all others.  Shall we experience such love?   It is up to us.  In this lifetime it may be possible.  To experience heaven on earth.  To each become a Sun.  To remove our illusions and ignorance.  Get ready for quite an adventure!

Ascending Doors

Artist Saiso Shimada, Original Ink on Paper, 2016

Our full body includes our physical body, our energy body, our emotional body, thoughts, soul and spirit.  It is far larger than we can imagine and with some time and training can be experienced.  This larger conception of the self and its connection with the full universe is the first step in discovering life again in all its magic, innocence and glory.

Explore: Be a Kid Again and View an Art piece with Joy

1.  Look at the Painting Ascending Doors by shodo Master, Saiso Shimada.

2. Imagine the doors opening up senses you have always had that allow you to experience energy.   Have the intent to open your senses.  Intention in meditation is key.

3. Send love just above the physical heart inside your body.

4. Put your hands in front of you palms facing each other.  Repeat three times outloud the word "Litmé." This is a little like qigong as you say the words you are speaking to the cells in your body.  As you say it continue to send the high vibration of love inside the heart.  You can also say Litme the first time loudly, the second time less loud, the third time silently.  Or if you don't like saying words you don't understand, just focus on intent.

5. See if you feel heat, tingling or increased sensation in the hands. If so you are ready to go!   If not, you may have minor blockages or wish to remove any watch or jewelry you have on and try again. Keep sending love to the heart for 2-3 minutes.  Play.  Don't take yourself seriously!

Heart Cellular Intelligence

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, Acrylic, Large canvas, 91cm x123cm, 2017

This painting was done doing mantras.

We explore the opening of the spiritual heart playfully and begin to sense the beauty within by setting the intent to awaken the Fire of the Heart.  This practice can be used to send our love to others, bless our food, or intensify prayer or meditation.

As our words have powerful intent,  we say three times outloud, "I activate the Fire of the Heart to the Maximum Level."   The first time loudly, the second time softly, the third time silently.

We can then send love inside just above the physical heart for 2-3 minutes or as long as you wish the mediation or experience to last.

Although we use words in the Lipnick meditation and an image of the heart to assist in my studio, this can be done without either with a bit of practice and simply by intent.

Yann teaches with sounds that impact cells within the body, and although it is not difficult this can turn your understanding of reality upside down.  I don't teach this path, I just have some fun with my paintings and joy so people realize there is more than the 5 senses. To succeed in this path, one must have a pure heart of a child. Very few do, and the ego can be taken for a ride just as it can when one may begin to experience siddhis (even if these are not siddhis but normal human capacities that can surprise!). For this reason, I see this path of knowledge as a start, and then you let go.  There is a different path with a similar result and less chance of you getting entrapped by your ego (which I call the way of the heart).

Yann knows the importance of the heart and in one of his works, explains that the most important is not any technique he teaches but the focus on opening the heart and keeping it open.

Through his teachings one can not deny the existence of energy and forms we never knew existed. That in itself is a tremendous contribution.  But it may be too much for some to integrate.

Unconditional Love

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, Acrylic, VERY LARGE Canvas,  160cm x161cm, 2019

The theme of the heart never gets old.  This painting was done doing mantras.

Our physical actions or postures have an impact on our whole nervous system but we are unaware that simply the way we hold our hands (for example facing up or down) can alter our state of being.

For this meditation, place your hands in prayer position in front of your heart (just like you were praying in the Christian tradition or in the Namaste greeting traditionally in India).  This will begin to activate the Plexus of Love.

While you focus on the region just above the physical heart (a spot that connects the physical body, energy body, emotional body and mental body), send love inside.

Say three times "Souyai." The first time loudly, the second time softly, the third time silently.

Know if you do not use these words (these words have strong intent) that activate cells within the body, the experience may be less strong than with the use of the word "Souyai."

For a less intense experience you can just say, "I activate the plexus of the heart" holding your hands in prayer position.

Again, this is all kids play, a fun way to explore a painting and your heart. Don't take yourself too seriously.  Play in full humility without expectations.

The willingness to explore, humility and the ability to play like a child is vital to life, to meditation and to new experiences, especially if you want to experience the energy of your heart.

This experience is different than the activation of the heart chakra and what you may know in the past. It's purpose is just to let you know that life is an exploration and there is much yet to be discovered. Once you know that forget about technique.  Just be in your heart.  Send love inside in that spot throughout the day.

You are sending love to you! And unless you yourself become love you not be able to express love to others.

It may get a bit tiring so rest. Explore.  Enjoy!

Documentary Film on Artists and Meditation at Nirmal Yoga Studio

The day after Saiso Shimada, the shodo artist, presented her works at the EU embassy private residence with Nathalie Ishizuka, meditator, and Masaki Nakamura, shakuhatchi player and several artists, they were asked by the documentary film artist Haryun Kim to share with them their process of art and meditation.

Nirmal, who was one of the guests at the EU event and a teacher and friend of Nathalie invited us to his studio for a most beautiful day of meditation, art and film.

Some of the meditations we had together were so strong the film maker got unexpectedly more than she bargained for during the shooting.  We had to pause, we took long breaks.

We enjoyed that beautiful day together immensely and we hope Haryun will continue her beautiful film work.  Thank you Nirmal.

These artist-yogi sessions where Nirmal was introduced to other young Tokyo artists as well as a Chinese Qigong master Zhou Seika were a part of what made Tokyo so special.   "Everyone at that event from the novelist and designer to the film maker or shodo lover, left moved by Shimada's paintings, Masaki's music, Nathalie's presentation of their work together.  "That day together something special occurred in all of us," says Ishizuka.

Artists and Meditation in Japan

Nirmal meditating at in Nathalie's office in Tokyo with the shaku-hatchi artist Masaki Nakamura, the shodo artist Saiso Shimada accompanied by Nathalie Ishizuka.

When Nathalie left Tokyo to move to Singapore it was important that the artists she found and worked with closely were able to continue meditation with a strong enlightened master should it be their wish or should they have questions or need support.  "Skype meditations across the globe could continue, but it is always good to be locally supported,"  says Ishizuka, "especially with strong meditations or meditators."

Nirmal provided invaluable guidance to Nathalie and her family with Ayurvedic consultations and Nathalie benefited at the end from a weekly treatment focusing on spiritual work.  "His ayurvedic treatments are simply unparellelled and the experiences I had were out of this world," says Ishizuka who at the time knew nothing of Ayurveda.  "It is rare to find an enlightened yogi who is also an advanced ayurvedic physician from a family of ayurvedic doctors.  "I am always lucky,"  says Ishizuka.  "Always in the best of hands."

"Nirmal also on a visit to Singapore showed Nathalie a meditation one can not find in books," she says with a grin.  "I am still working on that one!"

Lotus Petal Meditation

This painting by Nathalie Ishizuka is about the soul blossoming after March 11, 2011. It is a meditation on the petals of the soul that include knowledge, compassion and liberation. Each petal has several sub-petals and samyama can be used to explore one's soul.

Jewel of the Lotus

This painting by Nathalie Ishizuka is about the jewel of the lotus which she experiences like a sharp edged part of the soul that can transcend and pierce all things in full transparency.  In this painting the spirit is painted sharp as a sword -- and piercing three peaches. Each peach represents a crisis: Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fukushima.  The spirit transcends all and elevates.

Earth and Sun

This painting by Nathalie Ishizuka is about the earth and its intimate link with the Sun (the eye).  The sun is the source of all light on the planet and illuminates the earth and all on it. Within each of us, just above the physical heart is also a sun - our spirit that radiates far beyond this earth.  Between the earth and sun lies all of us who must elevate our consciousness individually and collectively.
